How To Un-F*ck Your Morning

Sometime last year I came across a Tumblr blog that I found to be pretty cool, Unfuck Your Habitat. There are all sorts of before/after images of projects people have been working on, as well as tips to help you make your life better.  I am already one who tends to prepare for things as soon as possible, to avoid all of the anxiety of rushing around at the last minute. Of course, I also tend to think that because I have certain things taken care of, it means that I suddenly have an hour's worth of extra time in the morning. HAHAHA. However, I have actually gotten to work on time every day this week (that NEVER happens, just ask my Dad). So I thought that I would share some of my tips for getting my shit together for an easy morning.

1) Shower at night- I started doing this when I would work out in the evenings, because who wants to go to bed all sweaty and gross? It also saves loads of time in the morning because 90% of my grooming is already done.

2) Put bags together- Yes, I take a zebra-print backpack with me to work because I am 12. Also because I have my book, headphones, water bottle, lunch, pencil case (because who wants to use the shitty work pens?), notebook, day planner, and usually a jacket to carry with me in the mornings. Also my purse, because I like to look like a pack-mule. I put them together, with everything in them, on a chair in the office the night before so that I can just grab them and go in the mornings.

Pick out your outfit- I downloaded a weather app on my phone, and I check it each night before picking out an outfit for the morning. It gives me time to dig through the closet/drawers/laundry baskets to find what I really want to wear. That and if I put it out, I will usually just wear it without changing my mind.

Same goes for accessories, I just pick out what I want to wear and put them in a little dish to grab after I am dressed. Cool beans.

Prep coffee/tea- Sometimes we go out for coffee before work, but most days we just drink whatever we happen to have on hand in the house. I grind our coffee beans ahead of time, and put the grounds in air-tight containers. Then at night, I fill the slow-drip with water, and put the grounds and filter in (sometimes with a cinnamon stick-they are reusable!), so all I have to do in the morning is hit the start button. If you have a fancy maker with a timer, even better. We don't have one with a timer, because I break things.

Pack lunches- I have been meal-prepping my lunches on the weekend, making salads, and dressing for the week. So I just grab a container of salad, dressing, and some snacks and pack them in my lunch bag the night before. Kyle tends to just eat dinner leftovers, so I make sure that we pack them in smaller containers instead of one big one, so that he can just grab it out of the fridge on the way out the door.

Some other tips from the website included charging all of your electronics the night before, putting some toilet cleaner in the bowl each night, washing the dishes in the sink, and getting to bed on time. I use my phone as an alarm clock, so that is usually charged, and I charge my iPod at work when I am not on break. You can customize these tips to fit your needs. Also check out the blog, because it is really cool and helps motivate my ass when I normally just feel like face-planting on the couch (this is not a sponsored post, I just think that blog is awesome possum).

Happy Thursday!

  1. This is great! I've been thinking of switching back to night showers because I already give myself 1 1/2 hours to get ready in the morning and that's not leaving time got anything special. Thanks for the tumblr link too! :-)

  3. These are all great tips and I know that for certain because they are the things I did when I was working. I needed to be at work by 8am so I didn't have any relaxing time in the morning even with all my preparedness because I would rather sleep. I could get ready in half an hour, including eating breakfast and getting my kid ready, or 45 minutes if I decided to shower in the morning. I always had my bag packed ahead of time like you do and elementary school teachers are probably the ultimate at being pack mules. It would be quite typical to arrive at work carrying a tote bag, a purse and one or two boxes of things. I had colleagues who used those rolling shopping carts or luggage because they carted so much stuff back and forth. My work environment always required a packed lunch, since most teachers work through lunch to some degree with extra curricular things or supervising, and schools are usually in the middle of a neighbourhood, not near downtown or any cafes. Lunch break is about 40 min so not enough time to go to a cafe or restaurant in any relaxing way anyhow.

  4. I am terrible for not getting my shit together in the morning. I keep meaning to get my clothes out the night before but I never do it - therefore I end up wearing the jeans from yesterday and the same vest top and cardi combo all week long.
Whenever I do get my clothes out, I always feel better and more comfortable in myself. I should do it more often.

  5. Good tips! I do a lot of these already, though I can never seem to make myself pick out clothes the night before. I'm too much of a moody dresser :)

  12. We do a few of those already..except I have a loaf of bread in the work freezer and buy a pack of meat and make it as i go. I keep cereal at work and eat once I have turned everything on. I'm not organised just lazy. But it works and i know i get up at 7am and at work by 8am ( it does take 40 min to get there stupid traffic)

Its always nice to see if their are other things to save time.
