Films: Good Night, And Good Luck

I am not going to lie, I was a little too geeked upon discovering two minor characters from Gilmore Girls had small roles in this film, together of course. Hello 1950's broadcast journalism!

This film chronicles the real-life conflict between television newsman Edward R. Murrow, and Senator Joseph McCarthy and the Permanent Sub-committee on Investigations. Murrow, along with the majority of his dedicated staff, strive to bring the public real, truthful journalism, despite losing major corporate sponsorship. A very public feud develops when the senator accuses the anchor of being a communist, and the CBS crew continues on despite fear and reprisal. 

In short, this movie brings fourth the vast difference between journalism then and now. I was quite pleased with the cast, it was a bit odd seeing Robert Downey Jr. in a role not saturated with snark and sarcasm...or maybe I have just watched The Avengers too many times (but there is no such thing, let's be real).  Another plus to this film? Dianne Reeves. She sings, and it is perfection.

    Its good to watch a movie like this. Especially, when I must confess, I watched Goon last night..I can't believe I watched the whole thing.

    I need to see this film. Anything about journalism makes me swoon. Especially when there's a touch of Gilmore Girls action to it.

    P.S. Sephora sells the JULEP products {they are the only store that sells Julep}, so you should be able to find them there. :)

    I enjoyed this film, too. There's too little good art about journalism. The field has changed so dramatically in the last half-century.

    If you really want to have a good time, rent "The Hour" -- a short British mini-series about a news-show in the 1950s. The actors are phenomenal -- and really cute: Dominic West ("The Wire") and Ben Whishaw (Q in "Skyfall").

    RDJ has done MANY films without that type of attitude. but then again I've seen 69 of his films ;)
