Little Bits & Mitten Eats: Mae's

9:01 AM

In-between Royal Oak, MI and Ferndale, MI, there is a tiny, blip of a city called Pleasant Ridge, MI. For the longest time sat a tiny breakfast & lunch diner, run mostly by an elderly lady, with the cutest assortment of miss-matched dishes, and delicious-if not basic-meals. I am *pretty* sure that the place was called “Anne’s Diner”, but we always called it “Anne’s Kitchen”, and by “we” I mean us idiots who can never get the names of places correct. The place was sweet, even Jack White was known to frequent the place, but it eventually closed.

Luckily, someone bought the place two years ago. The new owners managed to keep the small-dinner charm, along with the hours, and they support Michigan companies by purchasing and serving their products. They serve-up their own unique items, catering to fatties like Kyle & I, and healthy vegan people. It has now become a peace-ground where yuppies and hipster can dine side-by-side. They named the diner “Mae’s”, and like the old farts Kyle and I are slowly becoming, we eat breakfast there before work at least once a week. This place will be the sole reason why I won’t hit my weight-loss goal by my wedding, as they give you your money’s worth in portions, and the dessert-case will ruin your life-they contain fresh, hand-made goodies everyday. Kyle and I usually end-up splitting whatever we get, and it STILL is very filling. Breakfast at this place is what gets me through the rest of my shitty work-week (I typically mentally check-out Wednesday afternoon). Because the place is so tiny, you really can’t go with more than four people, and the only other downside is that they close at 3pm. I hope that one day they can somehow expand without losing their charm and become open for dinner.

1) Kyle "Sideburns", awake too early for his own good. 2) A half-order of the Coffee-Cake Pancakes, these are amazing. 3) A half-order of the Sweet & Savory plate. I also ordered some fruit so I wouldn't hate my life later that day. 4) The best Sea-Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies ever, hands-down.
