BECAUSE I CAN

Lately I have been thinking a lot about this little blog and I feel pretty bad for slacking so much on posts. Not that anyone out there is dying to know what the hell is going on in my life, or what I am wearing, no. I feel bad because this blog has always been a little creative outlet for me and by neglecting it, I feel like I have been also neglecting taking care of myself in a way. This blog will never be a real fashion blog by any means, It will never have the most creative photos, or content. But each post will contain something I like, something, even if it isn’t all that extraordinary, that I think is neat. I never really address politics, current events or anything of the like on this blog (and I know a lot of bloggers are criticized for that), because I feel that if someone were really looking for that kind of information, they could find a better version of it elsewhere. I could voice my personal opinions on those matters, but as I stated before, this is my creative outlet. I will/have gotten on my soapbox and ranted on some matters, but this blog is meant to express myself in all of the small, everyday happenings that I deal with and how I can get through them in matters that prevent me from ending up in prison for strangling my co-workers. If putting on (what I think is) a cute outfit makes getting through a long day a little easier, I will share that. If posting pictures of my friends and I, all gussied up makes me smile, it’s on here. Same goes with the movies, books, and food I feel are worth mentioning on here.

That being said, I feel a great need to simplify things in my life right now. When I first started this blog, I was dabbling a bit in every trend I saw to see what fit me best. I would end up at Forever 21 and the thrift store every payday, looking for something to wear on the blog. Almost three years later, I own a house, have student loans to pay off, and honestly love going out and doing things with friends & family so spending so much money on clothing is no longer an option. Buying a ton of clothes from thrift stores is a lot of fun too, but at the same time, I end up with TONS of stuff that needs to be altered and are never worn. My goal right now is to simplify everything, clothes, unnecessary items, I am even thinking of having a yard sale-not that I have the time… but I honestly think I have found my own sense of style, that I am comfortable with, and that fits my lifestyle. Instead of being a “what is Sara going to wear next” blog, this has become a “how many times can Sara remix her favorite dress/top/shorts” blog. And I am happy with that because it is more realistic, and less stressful. I am not saying that I will never experiment with a new trend again, because I will, but I want this blog to become my creative outlet, where I can have my “me time”, and not something stressful. Of course I say this as I am facing a busy-ass weekend; life just has too many awesome things to offer at once! BUT, I feel pretty good about this and I am hoping it will improve how often I am able to do posts.

Also, balls.

  1. I have been feeling the same way about my style. I just did a massive closet clean out and now I can grab clothes and know that no matter what it will go together. If I had a top that could really only be paired with one bottom to look good then it is gone! Simplifying is so nice. I like clothes and I like stuff, but I really like it when those stuffs are minimal and functional and beautiful.

  2. Nothing wrong with re-mixing! I do it all the time. It's my favorite.

    Your dress is very cute!

(And your blog post title has put the "Everybody Can Can" song from Moulan Rouge in my head)

  3. I totally feel the same way when it comes to certain topics and issues. I would much rather direct my readers to someone that can talk about it more eloquently than me. I would just be a jumbled mess if I tried to do that.
When I first started blogging, I used to read a lot of fashion blogs, but now I just let my Google reader and Bloglovin feed pile up. I'm just not into fashion as much as I was 4-5 years ago, which is why I only blog once a week. I'm hoping to get some inspiration this weekend.
Man if I can write a novel in your comments section, I should be able to write on my blog. Haha.

  4. Hey, keep thinking re-mix and upcycling. I have ideas..just doing it..hmmmm..I blame it on my sewing machine and time issues. And yes, I'm cheap...so therefore I write.

So much you have to look forward too..and keep in mind, your views are a lot like ours. Its good to your input.

  6. I think many of us out there feel the same way. I'm 32 now and I have no desire to run out an buy a lot of stuff just for a fashion blog. I'm not good with DIY's and I'm a busy mom. Lately I feel my blog is an extension of my Instagram and I'm fine with that.

BTW: You look so pretty here!!

  9. Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this blog. It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's tough to get that "perfect balance" between user friendliness and visual appeal. I must say you have done a very good job with this. In addition, the blog loads super fast for me on Opera. Superb Blog!

  10. Well it great that you recognize that. I know that I dont want to LIVE for my blog...I just simply want to blog. I want to do something fun. Post something I like. Mention someone I love. What I'm listening to and so forth. It doesnt have to be my day and bread and I certainly dont want to spend money on it. I mean I'm a baller on a budget. I cant be buying new clothes every two weeks. And if you're planning on selling your stuff maybe you should do one of those "shop my closet" things. I'm sure you're readers like your style (I sure do), and would love to buy some of you well-loved clothing, things, trinkets and such!

And yes, I agree, I should have given the red album a chance...I just felt betrayed by Beverly Hills haha.

  11. HUR HUR YOU SAID BALLS.

After working out a ton and losing a bunch of weight, a lot of my clothes don't fit anymore. I'd love to get a lot of my favorite pieces altered so I can still wear them. While I love buying clothes, I walked into a H&M today and got all stressed out about buying new clothes. There's so much I want to get, but navigating crowds and being around people makes me all intimidated. So I just end up wearing the same clothes lol. I think I went almost a year without buying clothes and remixing clothes...and I was totally okay with that.

  16. Great post, Sara. I understand your point exactly.

At its best, our blogs should be a creative outlet, something that lets us exercise our imagination and have fun. So our posts should reflect what we're thinking and want. Blogging is not a job, we're not getting paid, and we should not do what everyone else is doing.

Very clearly, you are going through a transition. The changes in your life show that -- and the new activities mean you have less time and energy for other things. Faced with competing demands on our attention, we have to prioritize which is what you are doing. Good for you for being so rational.

It's a joy to read your blog. The essence of Sara-ness comes through in every post. Please continue to be yourself.

  20. I think it is better when people post about their beliefs and what they have stances in even if they don't agree at all with my own, because it shows how wonderful a person is that they have SOMETHING that they can talk about RATHER than just fashion.

  21. I'm closing in on my first year of actually sharing pictures of what I'm wearing, and while it has been fun, I do think it's easy to get caught up in dressing to entertain others. I'm on a self-imposed shopping ban right now, and it's been pretty darned enlightening. And hard. But while thrifting is amazing, you can end up with a lot of clothes you don't remember buying :o

I love seeing style bloggers re-wear their clothes - keeps 'em real :)

  22. I feel the same. Sometimes I feel pressured to wear what's on trend but it's not me. I do like to shop and would want some pretty things to grace my feet and body but I wouldn't want to drown in bills either. It's good to find balance while able to maintain a fashion blog. It's not always about what's off the rack. It's always about self expression and being true to one's self.
