Skate World

8:30 AM

Throughout middle-school and the early years of high school, there was one place where everyone went, because everyone was welcome. Every Friday night, we’d deck ourselves out in our finest dudes (cute spaghetti-strap tank top & flares), grab our rollerblades & beg one of our parents to cart our asses out to Troy Michigan, to Skate World. From 7:30 to 11pm, we somehow managed to dance to pop music while skating and eat crap from the vending machine for dinner. We tried to look slick and not fall during “girls skate” to show-off in front of the boys, and we always skated with each other during “couples skate”.

Saturday night, my friend Sara and her boyfriend Dan treated Kyle and to a trip down memory lane. We headed out to Skate World on “Teen Night”, and nothing has changed, except the music is even worse-but it was so much fun! We all tried out skates, Sara switched to blades half-way thought the night, and we ate pizza, played ski-ball in the arcade and laughed at how old we were in comparison to the teenagers surrounding us. These kids were crazy! They would zip around you and jump and flip like it was nothing. We seriously had a blast and it was nice to get a little subtle workout in on a Saturday night. I cannot wait to get a group of people to go again, it was a blast!

  5. Now, that skating would work up an appetite for me. I bet the pizza was extra great too.

  6. Sweet times! My grandpa used to skate. He was like watching ice skating. Last time he went with us, they wouldn't let him skate, because they said he was too old.

You guys should try to get together, once a month for something like this.

  7. Those were definitely, the days. Oh, such memories. I'm not sure I should tell the story or not..but I will. One, my brother making a very bad joke that went over the intercom saying a couple's name...Sharon and Holden Cox. The other, this adorable guy who could have been on 90210, but later was sent to prison because he killed some one. He was in a so called cult of vampires.

You just never know what you might find at the skating rink.

  8. I have had a hankering to go roller skating lately! I always went a few times a summer with my camp and of course for b-day parties...our local rink was Roxy Wheels. LOVED IT. Also, skeeball, pretty much my fave thing EVER. EVERRRR! XO Lori

  14. Gah! Sara this sounds like the most thrilling outing. I haven't skated in years; but I used to love going to the rink when I was little - especially when the fog machine came out! :P

  18. Your middle school life resembles mine. There was a skating place nearby where I was most of the time and I had no friends so it was not easy being there but I loved to skate and blade. . .and then the place closed down. Very sad. I don't even know where there is a rink these days.
