Slagathor

7:51 PM

I have been the one and only Sara Lynn Astley for the 26+ years I have been on this earth. Of course over the years I have also been known by certain nicknames time and again, but I have always been known those around me as an Astley. The Astley's have their antics, everything from a short fuse, the automatic urge to swat someone for so much as looking at one of our loved ones cross-eyed, for always speaking from the diaphragm and of course, for making any meal into a sandwich.

My Mother speaks in such tones only dogs can hear her, my brothers bellow upon their entrance to every room, and my Father has a strange fascination with twisted roosters. How then, am I supposed to give up my very name that I was born with? That I have always been known by! If I take on Kyle's last name in September, I can no longer chalk up my strange behavior in public to simply "being an Astley".

Not that there is anything wrong with Kyle's last name, Gerard is just as good as name as any. It can even be pronounced all French-like and fancy. Taking on Kyle's name would give me permission to act out in such ways that only those specific Gerards are known for, like getting food in my hair when I eat or being ungodly late for everything (although I am already getting pretty good at that).

However, I also question why I should be restricted to staying an Astley or becoming a Gerard. Why not combine the forces and take on the Astley-Gerard combination, making myself the hybrid monstrosity of both families? I could then be really late for stuff while eating a spaghetti-sandwich, and then yell really loud about it being in my hair when I finally get to my destination! It's brilliant I tell you! Although, I would have to face reality and accept that my initials would then become SLAG. Le sigh.

  2. I will never change my name because it has such a nice ring to it and hopefully something will be published under it so I CAN'T change it. The reputations of both Gerard and Astley seems pretty kick ass though. I should be a Gerard given that I get food in my hair all the time haha

I love all the varying shades of blue in this outfit.

  3. Ha! You took a common problem and made it funny. Real funny. SLAG?! That's hilarious. You're so clever, Miss Whatever Your Name Is...

  5. I'm sorry that I'm so behind on your posts. I missed out on those sinful looking butterscotch oatmeal cookies. Don't worry, I've added them to my "bake next" list. By the way, sorry your muffins didn't turn out. What was the recipe? I have a few "healthyish" recipes I could send your way if you're interested. Do blueberry yogurt muffins sound awesome to you? Or could I entice you with banana butterscotch muffins? Give me a shout!

  6. I've been catching up on your blog! I took sick & blah whatever.

My last name isn't really cool & the way most people pronounce it irritates me to no end, but I feel the same way. I could never part ways with it. haha

PS. I so wanna go to your wedding.

  7. SLAG?! :P :D I haven't changed my name after getting married yet, I like being a 'Kumar'! I will add on my husband's name at some point though!

  9. Haha SLAG :) well, this is a very important decision to make! But I don't think it has to do with belonging or not to a family. I think that you should adopt Kyle's surname near yours and become the combination of the two families, though ^^
Oh and about the outfit: you look super cute! I love the knot in your sweater and I love the dress.

  12. What a delightful and hilarious ode to both families. Hyphenation is cool as long as it flows, and I think Astley-Gerard does have a nice ring to it.

I have to admit, the title of this post caught my eye right away. Slagathor was my cat Pinky's name for the first two years of his life (before he came into my life). I couldn't bear to call him that, so I changed it to Pinky (as in the show "Pinky and the Brain".

  13. I love this post. The outfit you are wearing is adorable. And I completely understand the sentiment. There isn't a specific 'Cline' way to act however I'm stubbornly attached to the name. (Maybe that is a Cline thing?)
However my boyfriend's last name is Carney. And while I don't mind if my children carry on the Carney name, I don't particularly want it myself. To be accused of 'acting like a Carney' has a completely different implication than Gerard though ;)

  14. I love that you knotted your sweater in this look. Its very cute. Changing your name is a big decision but even if you take his name you will forever be an Astley :)

  15. I've never even given thought to what marriage and name-changing would mean to me. Wow. Eye opening. I think I've always been keen to take on my love's name because in that way I would 'belong' somewhere... I've never really felt that. *wah* haha.

My legal last name is Gerard if that's any help in making a decision. :DDD

  18. I hated my maiden name but that's because it's not REALLY my maiden name (my dad has no clue who his real father is and his mother kept the secret to her grave). I couldn't wait to have Rob's last name because of it. Anyway, you do have a lovely maiden name filled with uniqueness and loveliness! It is oh so nice though to take on a husband's name . . makes it even more official you know?. ..
