Eats: Goulash

Mmmm Goulash. I figured since I have been posting about food more often on this blog, I should add the occasional junk food on here. This is one of my family favorites and I am pretty sure it was a staple dinner for most families in my area growing up, everyone just added a little something different to their own.  I made this at my housewarming party and a lot of people liked it, so I made a big batch of it again to bring over to my parents house the other week.

I made a double-batch for about six people, but if you want a smaller batch here is what you will need:


-1 box shells and cheese
-1 pound ground beef/turkey
-1 large tomato or two small, chopped
-1 small onion, chopped
-Olive oil
-Seasonings (I have my usual black pepper, season salt & cayenne pepper).

First you will want to boil a pot of water, and cook the noodles for the shells and cheese. While that is cooking, heat up a large skillet, with a tiny amount of olive oil in it. Next, break apart meat in the skillet, and cook until half-done. Next, add the chopped tomato and onion, and season to taste. Cook until done.

Drain the noodles and mix in the cheese, and then add the cooked meat, tomato & onion mix. You are all done! There are healthier options for this, you can use wheat noodles, healthier or non-dairy cheese, lean turkey or meat substitute, but I thought I would share the typical way we ate this as kids. Not very nutritional, but delicious and cheap.

  4. wasn't a big goulash fan growing up and now that i'm "grown up" I might have to give it another try, it looks pretty simple and actually yummy!
    But...I am a BIG fan of TMBG!! never seen them though...how sad
    :(. (just saw they are coming to CA in NOV!!! AAAAHHHH!!!!)

  5. Mmm, ok so it's 9:30 in the evening and now I have a major hankering for some cheesy goodness like this! I haven't had goulash in years...I never tried making it, but this really makes me want to give it a go. Looks delicious!

  7. Its good to know exactly how to put it together..because I was doing it wrong. I should make the noodles and cheese separate, before the meat and stuff.

  10. Its so true! Everyone has a little something different they do for goulash. We use egg noodles and no cheese! MMMM goulash...so autumn-y.
