Pretty In Pink

5:02 PM

Teenage love and social clicks, high school in a nutshell. Andie Walsh has both on her mind as she is a working-class girl from "the wrong side of the tracks" who is smitten with a rich preppy kid at her high school., Blane McDonough. Blane seems to be a little different than the other "richies" at school, he is more sensitive and he is openly nice to Andie, unlike the other rich-kids.

When Andie and Blane decide to try dating they have three strikes against them from the get-go. The first being that although Andie adores her unemployed Father, she is embarrassed of her small, run-down house and does not want Blane to know where she lives. The second being that Andie and Blane have separate social circles, which puts significant pressure on the couple when they try to associate with either group, they are mocked, teased and ridiculed.  The third one is the smallest, but still significant, Andie's long-time childhood friend Ducky is in love with her, but is afraid to admit it in front of her. Instead, he just goofs off. But when she starts showing strong interest in Blane, Ducky becomes lost and distant, and no longer there for Andie like he once was.

When things start to become too much, Andie and Blane stop seeing each other, even though they obviously still want to be together. Andie turns to her boss and mentor Iona for some much needed guidance and ends up with a vintage pink prom dress for a dance she wasn't intending on going to. Her Father surprises her with a second pink prom dress in an effort to let Andie know that even though they struggle, he is still her Father and he is still there for her.

So Andie does what she does best, she creates something new and pretty out of the things given to her in her life. She decided to attend prom, to show that she is not broken.

With her new-found courage she shows up on the steps of prom, clad in pink. After seeing the crowd she starts to get second thoughts about going in alone and turns to find Ducky standing behind her in the door. They enter hand-in hand and they silently forgive each other for the recent separation in their friendship when the rich kids begin relentlessly mocking them upon their entrance.

Que Knight in Shining Armor: Blane! He defends Andie and Ducky and finally realizes that his friends are not what he thought they were. He shakes Ducky's hand and turns to leave, feeling that he has made his peace. Ducky notices that Andie still has feelings for Blaine and although he still loves her and it hurts him to let her go, he tells her to be with Blaine to see her happy.  After Ducky's blessing, Andie and Blane share a long-awaited kiss, the start of an official poor-girl, rich boy romance finally begins.

I would have picked Ducky ;)

  1. I've never seen this surprisingly. I am shockingly under-watched on John Hughes films with the exception of Ferris Bueller & The Breakfast Club. It sounds cute though.

I could totally tell you were rooting for Ducky throughout this post ha

  16. I think that dress was perfect as it was and they had to butcher it to pieces and make it look bad and it looked bad ON her too!! ugh. I love this movie though so much. It's so sweet. Duckie's record shop dance stuff was adorable. Thing that is soooo weird is that when I was in high school there was a kid who had a huge crush on me that looked just like him (but I was too into my husband to notice anyone else). Instead the guy that had a crush on me though got married to a girl who tried to be like me (she's not anymore though, she told me though that she wanted to be me and so she dressed like me, etc). Of course he was a cheating idiot who had affairs on my friend, so I was smart to stay away from him back then. Every time that I see "Duckie" I see that kid though. It's really odd.
