A Guest Post By Tiffany

Hiya, it's Tiffany here from nynga + the bear. I'm a fellow mitten blogger who's obviously been asked by Sara to guest post. Hijacking the blog for today, yay!
Anyway, I didn't know what I was gonna write about until earlier today--before I went out celebrating my sister's 21st birthday--when I came across this on Tumblr:
What. WHAT. A fucking diet book for six year old girls. WHAT!?
What is the point of this book? I mean really? To teach girls from a very young age that the only way to be successful is to be thin and attractive? Because that's what I'm getting from the cover.
& why Maggie? Why not Sean, Michael or Patrick?
Children shouldn't be encouraged to go on "diets". Diets aren't realistic. Diets aren't healthy. Children shouldn't be told that they need to be thin in order to be excepted. They should be encouraged to eat healthy foods. They should be encouraged to love themselves and not envy others.
Not all children who are chubby are necessarily unhealthy. Not all children who are skinny are necessarily healthy. Am I right?
WHAT ARE YOUR TAKES ON THIS? LETS DISCUSS.

  1. I agree children should not be placed on diets. They need a healthy, rounded selection of foods. If they're eating healthy and getting exercise, then their weight will be fine.

  3. Oh, wow. Things like this are damaging to young kids. The focus should always be on healthy eating habits and body image. Kids should never be on a diet in order to lose weight.

  4. The only time a child should be put a diet for weight purposes is if they're morbidly obese or way too thin for their age and it's a risk to their health. I agree that the focus should be on encouraging them to eat healthy. I think it's important that they also have role models of all different sizes so they can see that 90% of healthy people aren't super tall and thin.

  5. jezebel did a pretty good post on this last week.

The opening line "Are you concerned that your child has yet to develop any body image issues and still remains blissfully unaware that society wants her to be as thin as possible?" kinda sums it up.

The word diet has some terrible connotations.
Why not focus on health, body love, and self esteem. Let kids be kids and build our cities so they have space to play and be active.
So much I want to say - but in a nut shell. There is so much wrong with this book, and I'm glad that others think so too.

  6. I completely agree. Healthy food is the way to go and each child has his or her own body type. It's all about being active and eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies (organic of possible)

  7. That pretty much makes me sick and makes me want to write the author an angry letter. Girls have a hard enough time with self-image starting younger and younger without things like that to reinforce their misguided beliefs about themselves. When I was 8, I thought I was fat and asked my mom to take me to the doctor to put me on a diet plan. I think she thought she'd humor me and that the doctor would tell me I was perfectly fine the way I was since I didn't believe her. Instead, the doctor gave me a plan. I was 8, for God's sake, and I'm lucky I didn't develop an eating disorder. As much as I love co-running our blog, sometimes I wish there weren't such a dire need for the reasons behind why we do it.
