Marines

David

This has to be one of the saddest yet wonderful family pictures for many reasons. David left for the Marines on Sunday so it was a bit of a bittersweet Father's day at the Astley residence. I am really proud of my little brother, he wanted to do this for the past year and dedicated long hours in preparation for this departure. He wants to be a mechanic, and is going to get specialized training after the initial boot camp, which lasts three months. We are all really bummed because although we can write to him, he can't receive any letters for two whole weeks. I can't wait to write him and I am going to try to take a bunch of pictures of everyone to send along as well.  Everyone in my family is very proud of David and we know he will succeed in his goals, I am going to really miss having him around because it is not like he is just going off to college where he can be home for the summer and holidays, he will only be back on certain weeks and only if they are approved. I also am really bumming out because although Kyle and I have not made many plans, we both want all of my brothers to stand up in our wedding. I am hoping that he can be a part of it still, and he said he would request it off. Which puts more pressure on Kyle and I to pick a date, but it is worth it to have all three of my brothers there.

I guess I should take a second to address the other oddities of this photo. My Mother is balling her eyes out, my Dad looks pissed for some reason, Mark and I are the only ones smiling, and Liam, well, Liam sprained his arm after taking a flying leap of the couch Friday night. David is also holding a bag of underwear. So, if your going to go, you gotta go classy.

  1. Wow, that's so impressive that your brother is doing that! I wish him all the luck and success in the world. And this photo is pure genius. Have you ever seen the site www.awkwardfamilyphotos.com? This photo is like the epitome of that site.

  5. Wish him the best! I'm sure it was was a strange an exciting time for all of you. My brother's friend did this. Now his family has gone to certain destinations just to see him. So who knows what adventures you guys might have while he's on his own path.

Hope your Mom is doing OK. You guys might have to have some lunches together or something.

  8. I'm sure you guys were waiting for this moment to arrive and yet..it wasn't easy, either. I hope he does great at boot camp. I'm sure he can't wait to hear from you guys.

Funny, my cousin always enjoyed getting fresh undies when he was in the military. Especially, from home.

  13. It's so honorable what your brother is doing. It must be hard on the family though. I couldn't even imagine how I'd feel if my brother was to join the armed forces!
