A New Year

A new beginning. I am not sure if I feel any different yet. Slightly more motivated I guess, I cleaned my room today, and I have been eating slightly healthier. Louie went for a big walk with me this morning, despite the bitter temperatures and winds. I cannot believe that the next semester is upon me! I have already checked out my syllabus for my news writing course and it looks like Kyle and I are in for a lot of work. I am really happy to be taking a class with Kyle again, it will most likely be the last one we'll take together, but it should be interesting to say the least.

My New New Year's eve was pretty laid back. Kyle and I watched some movies and had some B nector wine (yummy meade that is made in the mitten) that we mixed with a dry ale and became pretty buzzed. We were lame and stayed in this year, but Kyle didn't even get out of work until late so we decided to be hermits. We have kind-of been hermits all week, and it looks like most of my semester will be that way.

It is kind of strange but to me,  there is something very attractive about the dead of winter, after the romance and craziness of the holidays. There is something about being outside in the cold, when the sky is all grey and the trees are bald, that is really depressing, but at the same time kind of wonderful. It makes me really appreciate the little things. It's cold, so I see people less, but those two pints of ale with friends is more rewarding once every two weeks than everyday after work in the summer.  I feel like I am alone more, so I explore my mind a little more, I feel that I become more creative. I feel like I am rewarded with the comfort of my favorite pajamas and hot stew when I come in from outside. The hot chocolate tastes better after ice-skating for hours. Everything seems to slow down for a few months, and to me it is kind of nice.

  1. Your new year's eve sounds a lot like mine, though ours was unintentionally low-key. It's true what you say about this time of year, I feel like my creativity is growing though the weather and the world are dark and quiet.

  2. I love your layering of the leather jacket and cozy cardigan

I wish I viewed the stillness of winter in the same optimistic way you do. I do like layering up in big chunky knits and how a simple cup of tea can make me feel better.

  3. I love your rings so much.

I know what you mean about the dead of winter. You put it so eloquently, and I agree -- the little things, like warm drinks and cozy meals, are so incredible when everything around you is frozen and grey and quiet.

  4. seriously. . .stop making me miss my old doc boots so much (okay don't stop!! haha). wah. I used to wear them with everything way back. This dress is really colourful and cute!! I always think you wear such cute things though. Thanks for liking my modest features so much! Glad to hear you had fun laying back and enjoying the day. I feel the same way sometimes about dead winter. My hubby and I were talking about it a couple days ago while driving around. Mmmm Hot Cocoa!

  8. I agree: slowing down after the holidays is a nice change-of-pace. And then it picks up again with the excitement of Spring. Places like your state and mine have distinct seasons and they're nice because they offer us different experiences.

You are absolutely right about the camera -- I'm playing with it already and can't put it down!

  16. Sounds like we did have a similar new year's eve, haha. I really wanted to do something this year too! Oh well, there's always next year. I love the bright colors of your dress. I like it when people wear bright colors in winter. However unfortunately I cannot share your enthusiasm about the dead of winter. Next month is going to be the worst. I absolutely loathe February and it's dull grey slushiness.

  17. I love how you turned what would be a summer dress normally into something perfectly suitable for such cold weather. Doc Martens. INSTANT LOVE.

And I agree with your description of winter on so many levels. It has a certain dark beauty to it. A dark lonely romance that doesn't exist at any other part of the year and I can't help but love it. It definitely gets the creative juices stirring.

  26. Good luck with your class! Hopefully it'll be fun and not too terribly difficult!

I love everything you said about winter. That's exactly how I feel about it, too. Something about the cold and the loneliness of the season seems so peaceful and weirdly calming.
